Lotería o LLorar is...

a  lotería themed boss rush game

THE SCENE

You are on a late night walk with your dog. Nice and peaceful... until he gets scared and runs away! It's getting later and later but he won't respond to your calls. When you're about to give up hope, you start to hear the sounds of a party in the distance. Maybe somebody has seen your dog there! As you approach, you wonder who would have a party in the middle of nowhere?

Once there, only one masked man is present. You're nervous but to your surprise, they know where your dog is! The only thing is that they want to play a game of Lotería before they tell you...

Play this twisted version of the iconic game of Lotería to save yourself and your dog. Battle legendary symbols of Mexican culture armed with only a single bean.

HOW TO ESCAPE?

Move left and right on keyboard to walk. Walk up to your bean to automatically grab it. Press spacebar to throw your bean. Defeat card boss legends by throwing your bean at their critical point. Be careful not to get hit! Look at your card collection and board progress back at the main table. Escape to leave menu if the "x" button doesn't work :)

BACKGROUND

This game is our submission to the Unidos Hispanic Heritage Month 2024 game jam.  I'm a daughter of Mexican immigrants living in the U.S. This game was inspired by cultural practices and rituals , legendary figures, Mexican parties, games, and just my identity growing up.  The first inspiration came from Lotería , a game that I played alot with my family, this was always played at parties and has since become a ritual. The different cards have become iconic and the visuals with each cards have become a reference point and recognizable, becoming modern legends with time moving forward. I wanted to highlight the cards and bring the personality and lore to life in a lively game that is more interactive and becomes bosses you have to fight to win, bringing that tension you feel when playing the real game onto this imagined game. The next biggest inspiration was this legendary figure called "El Chato". This is a cultural practice, dance, and tradition that is celebrated every year in the pueblos of Michoacan where my family is from. Men wear chato masks and dance around and children dress in all white outfit, typically representing evil fighting with the good. The chatos are a sort of demon like figure. The masks are beautifully crafted each with different designs but following a similar format and I wanted to represent that design and use the Chato as the central antgonist and providing a reimagined world. Another inspiration I took was memories of going to mexican parties when I was a kid and the party stops really late and you kind of just sleep in the chair , but wanted to capture that late night eeriness , where maybe there's this magical creepy dimension.
